Nothing like a little bloat to put a damper on your day… Auntie Flow is in town and she brought her extra goodies and a few temporary pounds with her. This week was definitely a sweats and over-sized t-shirt kind of week for me.
Plus, I’ve given into every single one of my sugar cravings and boy am I paying for it. Talk about a double whammy- I’m already dealing with some major bloat from lovely little PMS, and now I’ve over-stuffed myself all week.
I know you know exactly what I’m feeling! We have all had to deal with bloat at some point- especially us ladies! Water retention, hormonal changes, and indigestion are usually all to blame and not so fun to deal with.
That’s okay though! You know why? I’ve got my handy-dandy list of quick fixes that help beat the bloat belly and boost my mood!
Choose your foods wisely
Stay away from salty foods
Simply put, salt is a major cause of water retention. Opt for other spices to add some extra flavor to your meal, such as turmeric, garlic, cilantro and paprika which also contribute to a healthy gut!
Limit your carbs
Most of our carbs that come from whole foods are full of dietary fiber, and too much fiber too quick puts a lot of stress on your digestive system which can lead to gas and bloating. Not only that, but carbs also are known for being a big contributor to water retention. Lower your carb intake if you’re feeling extra bloat-prone.
Choose your drinks wisely
Carbonated drinks are a no-go
I like to pretend that a sparkling peach-flavored soda is going to refresh me and send my tummy troubles away, but it actually does the opposite. Those fizzy bubbles tend to get trapped in your stomach and cause all sorts of mayhem as far as bloat goes.
If that’s not enough to steer you away, many of those flavored waters and diet sodas are full of artificial sweeteners that your digestive tract struggles to break down, thus causing even more unwanted bubbly action!
Drink more water
Just not the sparkley kind! I know it sounds kind of weird.. but just trust me here. Drinking more water will help get rid of belly bloat by keeping your digestive tract flowing as well as flush out all that sodium that is probably causing a bunch of water retention.
Cozy up with a cup of tea
Peppermint and ginger tea are my go-to’s when my belly has ballooned. Both are known for reducing bloat and improving digestion, as well as having a ton of other benefits to your overall health!
Add a little lemon
I normally add a little bit of fresh lemon juice to my tea for some extra-strength bloat-beater.
Lemon is a natural diuretic and will assist in flushing out fluids to get rid of belly bloat!
Walk it off
A walk around the neighborhood, yoga, or some other light activity may be just enough to alleviate some uncomfortable bloat. Stretching and exercise will help move some of that digestion along and get rid of gas. Plus, it’s a major mood booster!
Here’s to bloat-free days!
